About the Role
This is an awake overnight position providing dedicated, one-on-one in-home support to a youth with complex medical needs in Sherwood Park, Alberta. The Health Care Aide will work four nights per week (Monday through Thursday, 9:30 PM – 7:30 AM), providing attentive overnight monitoring, personal care, and morning preparation to ensure the youth arrives at school safely and on time.
This role requires a registered HCA who is alert, diligent, and highly observant throughout the entire shift. You will serve as a vital link between the youth, their family, and a remote multidisciplinary care team — communicating updates effectively and documenting the youth’s progress with precision and care.
The right candidate is someone who brings not only medical competence but also genuine warmth, patience, and a deep commitment to the dignity and well-being of the young people in their care.
Key Responsibilities
Overnight Monitoring & Medical Support
Remain fully awake and alert throughout the entire shift, providing continuous supervision and support
Monitor and manage the youth’s sleep PAP (positive airway pressure) machine as required
Monitor blood glucose levels and provide appropriate support for a youth with Type 1 Diabetes, following established protocols
Respond promptly and calmly to any medical concerns or changes in the youth’s condition during the overnight period
Administer medications and carry out health-related tasks as delegated and trained
Follow established safety plans and emergency protocols at all times
Personal Care & Activities of Daily Living
Support the youth with all activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, and feeding
Plan and prepare nutritious, healthy meals that meet the youth’s dietary needs and any medically recommended guidelines
Assist the youth in getting ready for school each morning, ensuring they are dressed, fed, and prepared to have a great day
Ensure the youth gets on the school bus safely and on time every morning
Family & Guardian Communication
Provide clear, timely, and compassionate updates to the youth’s guardians at the end of each shift
Communicate any concerns, observations, or changes in condition promptly and professionally
Work collaboratively and respectfully within the family’s home environment, honouring family routines and preferences
Support families by being a calm, trustworthy, and consistent overnight presence
Documentation & Reporting
Complete thorough and accurate daily progress notes, incident reports, and shift documentation
Create, update, and amend safety plans, respite support plans, and Care and Intervention Records (CIRs)
Prepare monthly and quarterly reports as required
Operate BrightStar Respite’s internal software for documentation and reporting
Communicate effectively using email and Google Space with the broader care team
Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration
Work collaboratively with a remote multidisciplinary team including physicians, pediatric nurses, therapists, teachers, clinical supervisors, and family members
Advocate clearly and confidently for the youth’s medical, emotional, and developmental needs across all settings
Participate in monthly staff meetings, case conferences, and professional development days
Attend and complete all required training as per CARF accreditation standards and BSR requirements
Training & Mentorship
Occasionally train new staff members and mentor students completing practicums or field placements
Model best practices in overnight care, documentation, and professional communication

• Communicates clearly, professionally, and with diligence — with families, guardians, and
interdisciplinary team members
• Documents meticulously and understands the importance of accurate, timely reporting
• Thrives working independently in a home environment while maintaining a high standard of professional
care
• Is dependable, punctual, and has a reliable means of transportation to Sherwood Park
• Is familiar with CARF standards, policies, and procedures
Qualifications & Education
Required Registration & Knowledge
• Registered Health Care Aide (HCA) in the province of Alberta — current and in good standing
• Understanding and knowledge of CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities)
standards, policies, and procedures
• Familiarity with Alberta’s health care and disability support frameworks
Required Experience
• Demonstrated experience working with children or youth with complex medical needs
• Experience monitoring and supporting individuals with Type 1 Diabetes, including blood glucose
monitoring and response protocols
• Experience operating sleep PAP machines and other medical monitoring equipment
• Experience supporting youth or individuals with physical disabilities and activities of daily living
• Experience working within a family home environment
• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary medical and care teams
Required Certifications & Clearances
• CPR First Aid Level C (current)
• Police Information Check (completed within the last 6 months)
• Child Intervention Record Check (completed within the last 6 months)
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence
• Reliable personal vehicle — must be able to commute to Sherwood Park for every scheduled shift
• Willingness to complete extensive training as per CARF accreditation requirements
Required Skills
• Diligent, detailed documentation and report writing skills
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency with email and Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Space, Google Docs)

• Ability to operate BSR’s internal software systems (training provided)
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities during a shift
Assets (not required, but valued)
• Experience with sleep PAP equipment and respiratory monitoring
• Previous experience in awake overnight care or residential/in-home care settings
• Knowledge of or connection to Indigenous cultures and communities
• Previous mentorship or training experience with new staff or students
• Familiarity with child welfare systems (CFS, DFNA, or equivalent)

• Willingness to remain fully awake throughout all overnight shifts (this is an awake position)
• Willingness to complete extensive CARF-required training prior to and during employment
